The 25G and 32G transceiver tier is built around two form factors: SFP28 (25 Gbps Ethernet and 32G Fibre Channel) and CPRI SFP28 (purpose-built for 5G fronthaul at CPRI rates including 24.33 Gbps and 25.78 Gbps). SFP28 uses the same physical housing as SFP and SFP+, making it backward-compatible with SFP+ cages at 10G speeds.

What is SFP28? SFP28 is the 25 Gbps version of the SFP form factor, standardized for 25GbE and 32G Fibre Channel. What are the differences between SFP28 and SFP+? SFP28 and SFP+ share the same physical housing, but SFP28 operates at 25 Gbps versus 10 Gbps. SFP28 ports on modern switches typically support SFP+ modules running at 10 Gbps — giving you a forward-compatible upgrade path. Are SFP28 transceivers compatible with my existing cabling? Yes — SFP28 SR modules work on the same multimode OM3/OM4 cabling you already have.

Reach options for SFP28 include: SR (70 m on OM3, 100 m on OM4), LR (10 km on single-mode SMF), ER (40 km), ZR (80 km), and BIDI (10 km single-fiber). CPRI SFP28 variants cover fronthaul distances from under 1 km up to 40 km depending on the cell site topology.

25G is the current server-to-rack standard in cloud and enterprise data centers, replacing 10G in new builds. SFP28 is supported by Cisco Nexus, Juniper QFX, Arista 7000-series, Mellanox/NVIDIA Spectrum, and all major white-box switch ASICs. 32G Fibre Channel SFP28 is used in storage area networks connecting servers to NVMe-oF and all-flash storage arrays.
